Dressing Up In Denim
It was right smack bang in the middle of the 70’s when I first fell in love with denim. I was 10 and it was the beginning of a fashion fascination that is still with me today.

Every pop star turning up on Countdown sported denim flares so I had to have a pair. I thought I was the coolest 10-year-old in the neighbourhood. The flares were my first denim piece but definitely not my last. I went on to embrace denim skirts, denim shirts, denim shorts. I think once I even owned a denim bikini!
My favourite piece of denim was a pair of three quarter distressed boyfriend jeans from Adriano Goldschmidt. With a jacket and heels it was a funky look that was being perfected by Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City, and pretty soon everyone was doing it. I wore those jeans to death. Luckily it was at the beginning of the boyfriend trend so there were, and still are, plenty of options to replace them.
I have had several “denim disasters”. Choosing a pair of wide leg surfer-style jeans did nothing for my shape even though they were super comfortable. I once tried double denim ala Britney Spears in a shorts and top combo and only resulted in looking like an extra from the Beverly Hillbillies.
A great way to dress up denim is to add a heel and pop on a blazer. Dark denim is more formal than a lighter wash and in a lot of cases more flattering but the best tip I have for dressing up denim is just to imagine you are a pop star on Countdown!
